Networking is vital to your professional success. But how do you build a relationship with someone who will make a commitment to stay in contact? How do you create the right chemistry in which you feel empowered and take personal ownership of the networking effect? What are the common mistakes in networking and what are the risk factors involved? Is there a secret for networking? Why is networking powerful? How do we consistently and effectively do it? Networking sounds simple, but it is far from easy. This entertaining and thought-provoking presentation will help you see the power of networking in your profession and will show the steps necessary to foster your personal readiness for a competitive advantage. The speaker will present the essential skills for effective networking. He will also focus on the skill set needed to create a committed relationship. Backed by personal research, this is a presentation that will have you thinking about your approach to network and to learn the culture of professional networking.

About the Speaker

Mr. Grande Lum, as the Director, U.S. Department of Justice Community Relations Service (CRS), was recently nominated by President Obama and confirmed to a four-year term by the United States Senate in June 2012. Mr. Lum brings extensive expertise in dispute resolution and is committed to furthering the agency’s community relations mission. Before joining CRS, Mr. Lum served as the Director of the Historically Underutilized Business Zone at the Small Business Administration and was a clinical professor at the University of California Hastings School of the Law, where he directed its Center for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution. During his tenure, the Center was included among the U.S. News & World Report’s top law school dispute resolution programs for the first time. He has also been an adjunct professor at the University of California at Berkeley School of Law and co-manager of the Alternative Dispute Resolution externship program at Stanford Law School. His published works include The Negotiation Fieldbook, which is currently in its second edition. Grande also produced the DVD workshop “Getting Schools to Yes,” featuring Roger Fisher, the co-author of Getting to Yes and founder of the Harvard Negotiation Project. Mr. Lum currently serves on the Board of Overseers of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, which is an initiative of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
