Interview Workshop

This 3-hour presentation will be offered on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm (Eastern Time) in the Department of Education.

It is the interview that gets you the job. The resume doesn’t get you the job. The resume gets you the interview. So what are the elements of a successful interview? What are the hiring official’s goals for the interview? How do you create the right chemistry in which you can inspire the hiring official with a positive outcome? What are the common mistakes in interviewing and how to prepare your script for interviews? Is there a secret for successful interviewing? How do we consistently and effectively do it? Interviewing sounds simple, but it is far from easy. This entertaining and thought-provoking presentation will help you see the power of interviewing in getting the job you want and will show the steps necessary to foster your personal readiness for a competitive advantage. The speaker will present the essential skill set for effective interviewing and engage you for a mock interview practice. It will mainly focus on the skill set needed to create a successful interviewing.

Training Objectives

Participants will:

  • Identify the common mistakes in interviewing
  • Understand what hiring officials’ goals
  • Identify essential skills for effective interviewing
  • Practice the steps to enhance effective interview and preparation for interviewing

Interested FAPAC members or federal agency prospective attendees are requested to RSVP via email to diversity@fapac.org no later than March 1, 2013. We have limited space for inter-agency attendance and will award slots on by a first registration basis. Registration should include:

About the Speaker

Kathy Newman is a Career and Organization Development Consultant in the Learning and Development Division at the U.S. Department of Education, and has over 30 years’ experience in organization development consulting, career counseling and coaching and course design and delivery. She provides individual assistance, as well as teaches classes for Department staff on a variety of topics related to career and professional development. Prior to coming to the Department of Education, Kathy was a Dean of Students at two colleges and supervised the Student Development functions as well as taught courses in Psychology, Human Relations, Career Development and College Survival. She has experience in nurturing and supporting the growth of individuals and teams and her coaching style focuses on helping employees feel empowered to make the changes they desire in their careers and in their lives.
